About University

Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is a higher institution under the administration of Zhejiang Provincial Government. It can trace its origin back to the former Zhejiang Specialized Medical School established in 1912. In August 1958,  the Second Zhejiang Medical College was established in Wenzhou as a branch of Zhejiang Medical College, whose name was later changed to Wenzhou Medical College in accordance with its location. In 2013 Wenzhou Medical College was officially renamed Wenzhou Medical University. In 2015, WMU was shortlisted as one of the co-development universities by the Ministry of Education, National Health Commission and Zhejiang Provincial Government. In 2017, it became a Priority Development University in Zhejiang Province. WMU started its five–year undergraduate programs in 1958 and master’s programs in 1978, making it one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer master’s degree, and later also authorized to confer doctoral degree. WMU ranks 73 in the ESI Chinese University ranking, with 8 disciplines, i.e. Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Neuroscience and Behavior, and Immunology ranking in the top 1% of the world, among which Clinical Medicine ranks within the global top 1.21‰ in ESI ranking. WMU features 1 State Key Laboratory co-built by the Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province, 1 National Engineering Research Center, 1 National Research Center for Clinical Medicine (Ophthalmology Diseases), 1 Key Laboratory of Clinical Research and Evaluation of Medical Devices and Drugs for Ophthalmological Diseases of the State Food and Drug Administration, 2 Collaborative Innovation Centers jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province, 2 National International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases, 29 Provincial or Ministerial scientific research platforms, 2 Provincial Top Priority Disciplines, 3 Provincial Level-A Disciplines of Distinction, 6 Level-B Disciplines of Distinction, 10 Key Disciplines for Colleges and Universities in Zhejiang and 2 Provincial Priority Development Disciplines. WMU takes to heart the needs of the people and society, and stays committed to the mission of educating healthcare professionals of excellence, those that operate with confidence and vision and strive to achieve and innovate. WMU offers 30 undergraduate programs in 4 major disciplines of medicine, science, engineering and management. At present, the total enrollment of WMU amounts to 14,439 (exclude Wenzhou Medical University Renji College), including 5,279 postgraduate students (386 doctorate students), 566 international students, covering a full range of programs that include bachelor’s and master’s degrees, doctoral and postdoctoral studies, from full-time education to continuing education programs, with students not only from mainland China but also overseas and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. As the quality of education improves steadily, WMU graduates from Clinical Medicine Program have consistently ranked within top 10% nationwide in terms of their passing rate of National qualification examination for medical practitioners. According to the data from the Provincial Education Examination Institute, WMU ranks the first among the undergraduate colleges in Zhejiang Province in the graduate satisfaction of the employer of the class of 2020, the undergraduate graduate employability and graduate satisfaction to the university of the class of 2018, WMU has more than 14,000 faculty and staff, including academic appointments of the affiliated hospitals, and over 1,800 of them hold senior professional titles. The main campus of the university has 1,698 full time teachers, of which 444 have senior professional and technical positions, 578 have associate senior professional and technical positions, and 1,273 have doctoral degrees. WMU has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, 2 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Many excellent talents were selected in the National Ten Thousand Talents Plan, and as the Young and Middle-Aged Leading Talents in Science and Technology Innovation by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Provincial Super Experts; teachers won the National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize, Science and Technology Prizes of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, and were honored as National Outstanding Teachers, National Moral Models, National March Eighth Red Flag Bearer, etc. WMU also has 1  Innovation Team of Ministry of Education, 1 National Higher Education Team of Huang Danian Style, 2 Innovation and Talents-Introduction Bases in Higher Education of the Ministry of Science and Technology (111 Base). WMU was also awarded as the Provincial Advanced Units for valuing talents. In recent years, WMU has undertaken more than 1,200 scientific research projects of National level. More than 170 projects have won provincial, ministerial or national prizes, including 1 first prize of State Technological Invention Award, 5 second prizes of State Technological Invention Award, 2 second prizes of National Award for Technological Invention, 1 first prize and 3 second prizes of Technology Award of Ministry of Education, 5 first prizes of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, 1 first prize of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Science and Technology Award, 1 major contribution award of Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Major Progress, 19 first prizes of Zhejiang Science and Technology Award, 1 first prize, 1 second prize and 1 third prize of Human and Social Science Award of Ministry of Education, 1 second prize for Outstanding Outcome Award in Education and Research and 4 first prizes of Zhejiang Philosophical and Social Science Award. Composed of three campuses, WMU covers a total area of 1,900 mu. The university library has a collection of 2.03 million volumes. WMU publishes 5 academic Journals and 1 academic newspaper, among which Eye and Vision is listed in SCIE academic journal and 3 journals are listed as China science and technology core journals. In addition, the Chinese Journal of Optometry & Ophthalmology and Visual Science, is listed as one of Chinese Medical Association Journals. WMU has 5 affiliated hospitals, among which four are ranked as Level A Tertiary. WMU also has 29 non-directly affiliated teaching hospitals across the province. The Eye Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital are among the top 100 hospitals selected by Chinese Academy of Medicine based on their technology impact. The Affiliated Eye Hospital ranked 1st for three consecutive years among eye hospitals nationwide, and its Ophthalmology ranked 2nd for three consecutive years nationwide. Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU) is a province-state friendship project between the Zhejiang Province and New Jersey in the United States. It is a Chinese-American jointly established higher education institution with independent legal person status and limited liabilities. On November 16th, 2011, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China (MOE) approved the application of preparation on establishing Wenzhou-Kean University which was cooperatively run by Wenzhou University and Kean University USA. On March 31st, 2014, the MOE announced the approval of the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University. The University adopts such a governance structure as the Chancellor shall act as the executive officer, and serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors composed of members from both the Chinese and American parties is the highest authority of Wenzhou-Kean University. During the preparation stage, the University received friendly concerns from the Chinese Central leaderships and enormous attention from Party committees and People’s governments at different levels. On May 8th, 2006, Mr. Xi Jinping Secretary of CPC Zhejiang Province (at that time) visited Kean University in New Jersey and delivered a keynote speech in the Signing Ceremony of cooperation in establishing Wenzhou-Kean University. The MOE regards the establishment of the University as one of the critical projects that enlarges the scope of Education Open-up while enhancing education reform in return. In July 2014, WKU was listed on the fifth round of the deliverables of China-US High-level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange as the only education project in Zhejiang province. On September 23th 2015, President Xi Jinping mentioned Wenzhou-Kean University at the third China-U.S. Governors Forum, describing the University as “making good progress.” In June 2018, the Chinese Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province listed WKU as one of the exemplary Sino-foreign cooperative universities, supporting it to become “an internationalized and world-class university”. Striving for excellence in building an international university with world-class education, Wenzhou-Kean University has been dedicated to the principle of “providing students with different ways of development”. In November 2013, the University was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In March 2018, the Bachelor Degree Conferral Evaluation Panel of the Department of Education of Zhejiang Province concluded that Wenzhou-Kean University has the qualifications to confer bachelor degrees. In 2019,WKU was approved to offer 11 graduate-level programs. Being well-knit with Chinese actual conditions and needs in developing regional economy and culture, the University sets up its pedagogical goal that aims to merge Chinese and American teaching methodologies in practice and builds itself into a world-class university featuring world-class campus and facilities, professional faculty communities, academic research and maintenance services. Aiming to build itself into a high-level education institution as a fine example of Sino-foreign education partnership, the University strives to cultivate students with global vision and patriotic sentiment, pressing ahead China’s higher education reform and better serving regional economic, social and cultural development. The WKU TOEFL center was unveiled in September 2019, and Wenzhou has become the third city in Zhejiang Province that has a TOEFL test site. In January 2020, WKU was approved as a GRE test center, making it the only test center in southern Zhejiang area. The construction of the campus was listed as one of the major projects for the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta. WKU’s many international indexes rank top in Zhejiang Province. In the 2021 Best Chinese Universities Ranking released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, Wenzhou-Kean University ranks the 163rd. The University introduces advanced educational resources from prestigious universities in the U.S. and uses original American textbooks. 100% of the curriculum are provided by Kean University and all the courses are taught in English. 100% of the faculty are recruited globally. The University offers small size classes and adopts an inquiry-based learning approach. China’s national conditions and culture education are embedded in teaching practices. The University aims to cultivate students with global vision, know-how of international rules and conventions, and innovative creative and initiative competences. “Start here, go anywhere”. The University helps students realize their dreams and prepare them to be successful in the global arena. Wenzhou-Kean focuses on undergraduate education at the present stage, and it will offer graduate education in the next phase gradually. The University comprises four colleges–College of Business and Public Management, College of Architecture and Design, College of Liberal Arts and College of Science and Technology. The University now offers 20 undergraduate programs with six disciplines, namely, economics, science, engineering, literature, management and art. WKU has established a diverse and mixed discipline in the field of science, engineering, literature and arts with economics and management as its pillar. Finance, English, Computer Science, Marketing, Global Business, Graphic Design, Mathematical Sciences, and Biology were included in the provincial first-class undergraduate programs list. Global Business, Computer Science, and Graphic Design were listed as Zhejiang Provincial Higher Education Distinctive Program. Students will receive dual degrees from Wenzhou-Kean University and Kean University in addition to a graduation certificate from Wenzhou-Kean University. In 2021, WKU offers six graduate programs, including Global Management, Instruction and Curriculum, Computer Information Systems, Architecture, and Doctor of Educational Leadership. The University will roll out more graduate programs gradually, including Psychology (M.A), Educational Administration (M.A.), Accounting (M.S.), Counseling and Supervision (Ph.D.), and Combined School and Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.). Students will receive a degree from Kean University after graduation. WKU currently has about 380 faculty and staff, with around 140 faculty members. The faculty members come from 35 countries and regions around the world. 98% of them have overseas study and teaching experience, and most hold doctorate degrees. The outstanding faculty community has provided strong talents support for the University’s development as a global university. In 2021, the University recruited 1300 tier-1 students from 21 provinces and cities in China. Now it has a student population of about 3500. WKU and KU have exchanged 1200 students over the past few years. Now, WKU has graduated six cohorts –around 2100 students have graduated from the University. 60% of them choose to further their studies in the most prestigious universities in the world. Among the graduates of Class of 2020, 64% go to graduate schools, 46% are accepted by QS top 50 universities, and 75% are admitted by QS 100 universities. These renowned schools include Harvard University, Colombia University, University of Pennsylvania, University College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Melbourne, University of Hong Kong, and the University of Toronto. According to the data released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the Class of 2019 ranks the 13th by the rate of graduate college admission. Many outstanding students participated in various global platforms, including APEC meetings, World Youth Leadership Camp, and Youth Leadership Conference. Students also won awards in many high-level competitions both in China and abroad, such as Imagine Cup Global Competition, Mathematical Contest in Modeling, etc. WKU students also published papers in leading magazines, including Frontiers in Microbiology and Bioinformatics. They published 82 papers in international journals and meetings and attended 110 conferences. Covering an area of 494 acres in land planning, the campus of Wenzhou-Kean University is located in a beautiful township called Li’ao in Wenzhou. The area of the first phase construction is 173.8 acres and the floor area is 250,000 square meters. The style of Chinese layout and elements of American university are embodied in the campus buildings and facilities. The University strives for building a humanistic, ecological, intellectual, and outreach campus with merged Chinese and American cultures. A global and modern campus structure has been revealed along with the ongoing construction projects. The first construction phase of 200 thousand square meters has been built, including General Educational Hall, College of Business and Public Management Hall, Ge Hekai Hall, Comprehensive Lab, Student Residence, Faculty Housing. WKU is accelerating the projects of Student Learning and Activity Center, Stadium, Administration Hall, and Science and Technology Building. The design of the second phase of 2000 mu has started and the planning of Phase III Student Residence Hall and Phase II Faculty housing has begun. According to the strategic planning, WKU will develop about 7000 on-campus students and 400 faculty by the year 2025. 30 undergraduate and graduate programs will be offered to students, and the campus will reach 380,000 square meters. WKU will be a high-level international  university that is “contributing in Wenzhou, renowned in Zhejiang, influential in China and distinctive in the world”.

Wenzhou University is the only comprehensive university in southern Zhejiang, northern Fujian and eastern Jiangxi and a key university in Zhejiang Province. It is located in Wenzhou city, a famous historical and cultural city in China and known as "the best landscape in southeast China". The university was founded by the merger of Wenzhou Normal University and wenzhou University in 2004. The school can be traced back to wenzhou Normal School founded in 1933. It has 88 years of history and academician Gu Chaohao, winner of the National Highest Science and Technology Award, was once the president of the university. Xi Jinping, general Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Party School Press, has pointed out that "we should attach great importance to education and talent work, especially to run wenzhou University and other institutions of higher learning". Wenzhou University has formed a multi-level and multi-form running pattern of undergraduate education, graduate education, continuing education, international education and international cooperation education. Its disciplines cover ten disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art. It has 20 schools. The university now has two campuses, Chashan and Xueji Road, covering an area of 1,973.43 mu and covering an area of 993,200 square meters. Introduction to Wenzhou Wenzhou is a prefecture-level city in southeastern Zhejiang province, People's Republic of China. It is located in the middle section of the 18,000km-long east coast of China, intersecting the two economic zones of the Yangtze River and the Pearl River Deltas. It is the center of economy, culture and transportation in south Zhejiang Province. The city has a land area of 12,083 square kilometers, and sea area of 8,649 square kilometers. At the end of 2019, Wenzhou had a permanent resident population of 9.3 million. In 2019, the GDP of Wenzhou reached 660.6 billion RMB. Wenzhou has a history which goes back to 2500 BC. It was a prosperous foreign treaty port, which remains well-preserved today. It is situated in a mountainous region and, as a result, has been isolated for most of its history from the rest of the country, making the local culture and language very different from those of neighbouring areas. It is also known for its emigrants who leave their native land for Europe and the United States, with a reputation for being enterprising natives who start restaurants, retail and wholesale businesses in their adopted countries. At present, there are over 175 million Wenzhou people who started their business in China as well as 68 million Wenzhou business owners worldwide. They have built a network of business owners that covers the whole nation and links the world. Wenzhou is an important pioneer in the reform and opening-up of China, and a typical success of socialist theory with Chinese characteristics. Over 50 national and provincial reform pilot projects have been carried out in Wenzhou. As one of market economy’s birthplaces in China, the city’s private economy is well developed, providing a strong foundation for various industries. Over 40 national manufacture bases have been established in Wenzhou, such as “capital of electric appliance” and “capital of shoes” in China. Introduction to WZPT Upon the approval of the Ministry of Education, Wenzhou Polytechnic (WZPT) was founded through the amalgamation of Wenzhou Business School, Wenzhou School of Economics, Wenzhou Machinery Industrial School and Wenzhou Spare-time Technology University in 1999. Its history dates back to 1956. The college was funded by Wenzhou Municipal Government, and supervised by Department of Education of Zhejiang Province.
