About University

In 1940, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), the first science and engineering university was founded in Yan’an by the Communist Party of China. It has been one of the key universities in China since the founding of New China and the first batch of universities which has entered the national “211 Project”, “985 Project” and the “Top A World-class University”. The name of BIT was inscribed by Chairman Mao, and Li Fuchun, Xu Teli, Li Qiang and other older generations of proletarian revolutionists successively took the lead of the university. The university is now affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. All the faculty members and students are striving for the goal of “two hundred years” of the national standard, and are fully committed to the goal of building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. BIT was founded in 1940 in Yan’an, Shaanxi Province and was relocated to Beijing in 1949. In 1952, the school was renamed Beijing Engineering College, the first defense industry university in the PRC. In 1988, the school was renamed Beijing Institute of Technology. BIT now has 18 professional schools as well as Xu Teli School, Advanced Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science, Institute of Advanced Structure Technology, Institute of Convergence Medical and Engineering, etc. Engineering, material science, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science and social sciences ranked in the top 1% of ESI international disciplines, among which engineering ranked in the top 1‰. In recent years, combined with traditional advantages and long-term development needs, BIT has focused on the construction of “5+3” subject groups—“Efficient Damage and Protection” subject group, “New Materials Science and Technology” subject group, “Complex System Perception and Control” subject group, “Delivery Equipment and Manufacturing” subject group, “Information Science and Technology” subject group and “Characteristic Science” subject group, “Convergence Medical and Engineering” subject group, “Civil-military Integration and Innovation and Development” subject group, forming the overall construction layout of “leading advantageous engineering, promoting the integration of characteristic science, assisting linkage of fine liberal arts and interacting frontier cross-innovation”. BIT now has more than 3400 staff, including 23 academicians, 47 “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” professors,40winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, , 4 state level teachers, 6 state level teaching groups, 4 innovative teams of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 10 innovative teams of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program. BIT has 2 national collaborative innovation centers, 9 state level cooperative innovation centers, state level laboratories and 6 state level research centers. BIT aims to develop students as leaders with ambition, wisdom, innovation and sense of duty. Of all the 300 thousands students graduated from BIT in the past 78 years, there are leaders of party and country such as Li Peng, Zeng Qinghong, Ye Xuanping, academicians such as Wang Xiaomo and Peng shilu, leaders and constructors in every fields. BIT has received 20 national teaching awards, 14 national excellent courses, 10 national excellent video courses, 9 excellent resource-sharing courses, 15 excellent online courses and 2 national virtual simulation experiment programs up to now. BIT comprises 28,000 full-time students. Students of BIT have won 15” top 10 works” in 9 consecutive annual conference on innovation and entrepreneurship of college students, ranked 1st of the Chinese universities. Students won the champion of the international top events in the field of UAV in 2017, the golden metal of the China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition and top two of the “Internet+” Competition in 2018, the final champion of the ICRA 2019 RoboMaster AI Challenge ,two gold awards in the International Genetic Engineering Machine Competition (iGEM) in Boston, USA in 2019. In the past five years, the employment rate of undergraduates has remained above 97%, and the employment rate of postgraduates has reached more than 98%. Currently, BIT has established inter-university collaboration with more than 270 renowned universities in 74 countries and regions on six continents and student exchange program with more than 70 partner universities. BIT is building an international university, and has created a global network for exchange and cooperation. BIT has always formulated its strategies in light of national strategic needs and global developments in science and technology and education, and in accordance with its own strengths and missions. In the history of Chinee science and technology, the first television transmitting and receiving device, two-stage high altitude research rocket, light tank, low altitude height-finding radar and 20-kilometre remote camera were created by BIT. It has developed a clear edge in technologies relating to intelligent and bionic robotics, space adaptive optics, green energy, modern communications and industrial process control. In the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the National Day, BIT participated in the equipment development work of 10 of the 12 airborne teams and 26 of the 32 ground equipment teams in the reviewed equipment, a number of digital performance and simulation tasks, fireworks technical tasks and technical support for float design . Numerous technologic achievements of BIT have been applied in the Beijing Olympic Games, the Shanghai Expo, the Guangzhou Asian Games and the mission of Shenzhou VIII and Tiangong I. During the 12th five-year plan, BIT had input about 10 billion yuan for the technologic development and received 23 national science and technology awards, ranked 15th in the organizing award, 3th in the national science and technology special award, 1st in the defense science and technology award of the Chinese universities. BIT has won 5 national science and technology awards in 2016 and 9 in 2017, as well as 6 organizing awards in 2018. In 2019, the school won 6 National Science and Technology Awards. A number of scientific and technological achievements directly serve major national economic and people's livelihood projects. "Yan'an Root, Soul of Military Industry" is the red gene engraved into BIT; the school motto of "Take Virtue as the Principle, Learn to be good at industry", and the school spirit of "Unity, Diligence, Practicality, Innovation" advocated by Dean Xu Teli The style of "seeking truth from facts, not self-righteousness" has jointly created the school's unique spiritual temperament and cultural core. From the birth of Yanan in 1940 to serve the establishment of the Anti-Japanese War, to the 21st century, to cultivate high-level talents for the construction of an innovative country; from open-air classrooms, eating and living caves, to modern campuses, national key laboratories. Beijing Jiaotong University, a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transport, Beijing Municipal Government, and China Railway Corporation, is also an active contributor to the development of the "National 211 Project", the "985 Innovative Platforms for Key Disciplines Project". And the 'Double First-Class' construction. As one of the three founding bodies of the Jiaotong University, the history of BJTU can be dated back to 1896. BJTU originated from Beijing Railway Management Institute, China's first higher education institution committed to fostering railway management talents and was created by the Qing dynasty government. It is the birthplace of modern China's education in railway management and telecommunication. In 1917, it was divided into Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing Post and Telecommunication School. In 1921, the school merged with Shanghai Industrial College, and Tangshan Industrial College and formed the original Jiaotong University. After the restructuring of Jiaotong University in 1923, the Beijing campus was renamed Beijing Jiaotong University. In 1950, the school was again renamed Northern Jiaotong University with leading bridge expert and scholar Prof. Mao Yisheng as president. In 1952, Northern Jiaotong University was canceled, the campuses at Beijing and Tangshan, therefore, became independent and the school was renamed Beijing Railway Institute. In 1970, the name Northern Jiaotong University was re-adopted. In 2000, the school merged with the Beijing Electric Power College, and the administration was transferred from the Ministry of Railways to the Ministry of Education. In 2003, the name Beijing Jiaotong University was resumed. Numerous renowned scholars and inventors in Chinese history received education in BJTU, including LIU Han, founder of China's first radio station; YING Shangcai, inventor of China's first high-power steam engine; JIN Shixuan, author of China's first railway management monograph; XU Jing, pioneer of railway transport economics in China; YANG Rumei, one of the earliest four major accountants in China, and ZHENG Zhenduo, famous writer, literary critic, and historian. Certain famous academics also taught at the University, including HSIANG Che-Chun, Prosecutor of the Tokyo Trial, and MA Yinchu, a famous demographer and economist in China. BJTU has two campuses, the East and the West, in the renowned education district Haidian with a total area of nearly 67 hectares and building floorage of more than 1 million square meters. The Weihai International Campus in Shandong Province covers more than 67 hectares. All campuses are equipped with complete teaching and research facilities and enjoy beautiful scenery. In Huanghua, Hebei Province, the university set up the Haibin Rail Transit Comprehensive Research and Development Base. In Beijing, Fengtai District, BJTU constructed the world-leading Fentai Rail Transit 'Industry-Academia-Research-Application' Integrated Innovation Base. The Tangshan Research Institute of Beijing Jiaotong University, established in Tangshan, Hebei Province, is dedicated to developing a demonstration zone for technology R&D, commercialization of scientific findings, and international education. Over the past 120 years, the university has developed a comprehensive and coordinated education system with strength disciplines in information and management, characteristic disciplines in transportation, and other diversified disciplines such as engineering, management, economics, science, liberal arts, law, and philosophy. The total amount of international exchange students amounts to 1,142. In the teaching achievement award evaluation for latest three years, BJTU has won 3 First Prizes, and 8 Second Prizes on the national level. During the last three Chinese Society of Academic Degrees and Graduate Education's Graduate Education Achievement Award evaluations, BJTU took away 1 First Prize and 2 Second Prizes. BJTU has 34 National Level First Class Program Development Sites, 11 National Level Characteristic Specialties, 7 National Level Comprehensive Reform Pilot Programs, and 8 National Level Outstanding Engineering Education Plan Majors, among which 12 were certified by the National Engineering Education Evaluation and 3 passed the National Civil Engineering Major Assessment. The University has established 6 National Experimental Demonstration Centers, 3 National Centers of Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching, 3 National-Level Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Programs, 3 National University Student Extracurricular Practice Bases, 7 National Engineering Practical Education Centers, and 1 National Teaching Development and Demonstration Centre. The university's 3 Graduate Joint Education Bases were elected as 'National Engineering Degree Graduate Joint Education Demonstration Base'. BJTU offers 32 Nationally Certified First-Class Undergraduate Courses, 19 National Excellent Resource Sharing Courses, and 6 National Excellent Online Video Public Courses. The university also won acclaim through its textbook development, 4 chiefly-edited textbooks and 1 co-edited textbook were prized in the first National Excellent Textbook Reward. 1 faculty won the National Excellent Textbook Award for Advanced Individuals. The university's Computer Science Base was approbated as the National-Level Fundamental Discipline Elite Student Cultivation Base, and the School of Software Engineering was approbated as National Characteristic Model Software School. The university insists on creating synergy between its undergraduate and master programs, integration and fusion between disciplines, a close relationship between industry and university, and international connectivity. The employment of post-graduate students at BJTU was recognized by MOE as one of the first National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Example Universities, and Beijing Municipal Entrepreneurship and Innovation Educational Reform Demonstration University. The "Suite of Songs on the Long March" stage play and the original theatre play "Mao Yisheng" portrayed by BJTU Student Art Troupe was an innovative fusion of artistic expression and teaching that developed into an embodiment of the university patriotism education.

Beijing Foreign Studies University, or BFSU, is one of China’s top universities under the direct administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE). It is listed under Project 985, Project 211 and the Double First-Class Project of China. Located in Haidian District, Beijing, BFSU has two campuses which are separated by North Xisanhuan Road -- the West Campus and the East Campus. In 1941, the Russian Language Team in the Third Branch of the Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese Military and Political College was set up. It was later renamed the Foreign Languages School of the Central Military Commission under the direct leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the School was administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was renamed as the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in 1954 and merged with the Beijing Russian Institute in 1959. Since 1980, the Institute has been directly administered by the MOE. In 1994, it took on its current name, Beijing Foreign Studies University. Today, BFSU teaches 101 foreign languages. It houses China's largest non-general language teaching cluster that offers courses in some less commonly taught European, Asian and African languages, as the first of MOE's special teaching programs. While best known for its excellence in foreign languages and literature, BFSU has also launched programs in fields such as humanities, law, economics, management and education. To better serve China’s diplomatic efforts, it now teaches all official languages of countries in diplomatic relations with China. BFSU has schools, departments and centers dedicated to teaching and research, including some newly established in recent years. That group includes a teaching materials department, the first of its kind in domestic universities, Beiwai College, the School of International Organizations, the Graduate School of Education, the BFSU Artificial Intelligence and Human Languages Lab (BFSU•AI), the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture and the BFSU Research Centre for Country-specific Translation and Interpretation Capacity. Furthermore, the School of Asian and African Studies was restructured as two independent schools – the School of Asian Studies and the School of African Studies. BFSU has 52 research bases at national, provincial and ministerial level, including one key research center on humanities and social sciences under the MOE (the National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education), one laboratory on philosophy and social sciences under the MOE (BFSU•AI), one research center under the State Language Commission (the National Research Centre for State Language Capacity), four centers for regional and country studies under the MOE (the Center for Central and Eastern European Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, the British Studies Center, and the Canadian Studies Center), 37 centers for regional and country studies registered with MOE, and three research centers for people-to-people exchanges under the MOE (the China-Indonesia Research Center for People-to-People Exchanges, the China-France Research Center for People-to-People Exchanges, and the China-Germany Research Center for People-to-People Exchanges). The university also has one Beijing municipal key research center for philosophy and social sciences and one Beijing municipal research base for managing education by law. BFSU was listed as one of the first national language promotion bases and Beijing municipal research centers and bases of the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and named the collaborative innovation center for theoretical research on socialism with Chinese characteristics among Beijing universities. BFSU publishes four CSSCI source journals (Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Foreign Literature, International Forum, and Foreign Language Education in China), two CSSCI Extension source journals (International Sinology and Russian in China), seven other Chinese academic journals, an ESCI English journal (the Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics) and 11 other foreign language journals, published in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, German and Portuguese. Additionally, BFSU runs the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), the largest publishing house in China for foreign language books, audio-visual products and digital products. BFSU offers 121 undergraduate programs, 46 of which are exclusive to the university nationwide, and 33 of which are national first-class major construction sites. Having four national-level key disciplines (including cultivation disciplines) and seven municipal-level key disciplines, BFSU has degree programs in six major fields -- literature, economics, management, law, education and history, including doctoral programs under two subjects (foreign languages and literature, management science and engineering), master's academic degree programs under 11 subjects (law, political science, Marxist theories, applied economics, Chinese language and literature, foreign languages and literature, journalism, management science and engineering, industry and business administration, education, and world history) and master's professional degree programs under eight subjects (finance, international business, Chinese language teaching, translation/interpreting,  journalism and communication, law, accounting, and an MBA program). Its foreign languages and literature program was included in the "double world-class project", and rated A+ in the fourth national discipline assessment in 2017, the highest rating in China. Its foreign language education was approved as an advanced discipline at higher education institutions in Beijing. According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022, BFSU’s linguistics and foreign languages and literature programs rank 60th and 150th to 200th respectively. BFSU has more than 5,800 undergraduate students, 3,700 graduate students (master’s and doctoral candidates), and 1,200 international students. BFSU attaches great importance to its faculty’s academic development. It now has over 1,300 full-time Chinese faculty and staff as well as close to 200 foreign teachers from 60 countries and regions. BFSU’s faculty include winners of the Friendship Medal of the People's Republic of China, prominent teachers known nationwide, outstanding young experts with national-level contributions, leading talents in philosophy and social sciences under the Ten Thousand Talent Program, outstanding teachers under the Ten Thousand Talent Program, members of the Ten Million Talents Project in the New Century, members of the Four-batch Talent Project, Yangtze River Distinguished Professors and Young Yangtze River Scholars. Over 90 percent of the teachers have experiences of overseas study. The faculty of the National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education and the talent training group for global governance and international organizations were accredited as a "model university teaching team exemplified by physicist and educator Huang Danian". BFSU has signed exchange and cooperation agreements with 324 universities and academic institutions from 81 countries and regions. It has launched cooperation programs with many renowned foreign universities, including Brown University, the University of Edinburgh, Heidelberg University, Moscow State University, the University of Toronto, Waseda University, and Nanyang Technological University. BFSU also works as a partner with foreign universities to operate 23 Confucius Institutes and Classrooms in 18 countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas, the highest numbers among domestic universities. These Confucius Institutes and Classrooms can be found at Nürnberg-Erlangen (Germany), in Brussels (Belgium), at the University of Vienna (Austria), at the University of Rome La Sapienza (Italy), in Krakow (Poland), in Liege (Belgium), at Düesseldorf (Germany), at Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary), in Sofia (Bulgaria), at Palacky University (Czech Republic), in Munich (Germany), at the Kongzi Institute for the Teaching of Chinese Language at the University of Malaya (Malaysia), at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Republic of Korea), at Barcelona (Spain), at Moscow State Linguistic University (Russia), at Zayed University (United Arab Emirates), at the University of Tirana (Albania), at the University of Göttingen (Germany), at Oxford Brooks University (United Kingdom), at the University of Colombo (Sri Lanka), at ESCP Europe (France), at Maryknoll School (United States), and at the Open University (United Kingdom). Among them, seven have been awarded as global modal Confucius Institutes.

With the mission of "inheriting and carrying forward the printing civilization, innovating and developing the publishing culture", Beijing Institute of Printing and Information Technology (BPPA) is a pioneer in higher education of publishing and printing in China. The university is under the jurisdiction of Beijing Municipal People's Government and the General Administration of Press and Publication. Its predecessor was the Institute of Culture established by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China in 1958. In 1961, the Department of Printing technology was merged into the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. In 1978, with the approval of The State Council, Beijing Institute of Printing technology was established on the basis of the Department of Printing technology of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, under the management of the former State Administration of Publishing Industry. In 2000, the school was transferred to Beijing. After more than 60 years of construction and development, the school has become the printing and packaging, publishing and communication, design and art has obvious advantages in three areas and the characteristic, worker, literature and art, coordinated development, the only dedicated to training talents for the publishing medium complete industrial chain of full-time type characteristics of high level in colleges and universities, is known as the industry elite. The school adheres to the principle of moral cultivation and adheres to the school motto of "Abide by integrity, be faithful, be sensitive and act", and continues to provide programs for the cultivation of talents in media technology, media culture, media art and media management.
