About UniversityNorth China University of Water Resources and Electric Power
North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU), with an area of 2,336 mu, has two campuses: Huayuan Campus (36 Beihuan Road, Zhengzhou, Henan) and Longzihu Campus (136 Jinshui East Road, Zhengzhou, Henan). NCWU is a university jointly supported by the Ministry of Water Resources and Henan Province, with Henan Province as the main management institution. It is one of the major universities intensively supported by Henan Province and the leading institution of Chinese universities in the BRICS Network University. NCWU originated from Water Conservancy School of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Central People’s Government, which was established in Beijing in 1951 and renamed Beijing Water Conservancy School of the Ministry of Water Resources in 1954. It merged Beijing Hydropower School and Beijing Hydropower Correspondence College to establish Beijing Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1958. The institute was moved to Yuecheng Reservoir in Cixian County, Hebei Province in 1969 and renamed Hebei Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1971. It was relocated in Handan, Hebei Province in 1977 and renamed North China Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1978. It was moved to Zhengzhou, Henan Province in 1990 and its management was transferred to Henan Province by the Ministry of Water Resources in 2000. The Ministry of Water Resources and Henan Provincial Government signed the strategic agreement of co-development of North China Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 2009. It was renamed North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power in 2013. Water stands the very reason that NCWU has emerged, survived and then thrived, along with People’s Republic of China’s development of water resources and electric power. NCWU has been relocated three times and gone through many years of arduous process of building, relocating and school running. From Beijing to Hebei, and finally to Henan, it has endured great hardships in its development with perseverance and taken the initiative to serve regional economic and social development and national water resources and hydropower undertakings, having formed the school running philosophy of “Education Oriented and Learning for Application” and the school running spirit of “Committed to Water Conservancy and Unremitting Self-improvement”. NCWU has 24 teaching units including School of Water Conservancy and School of Electric Power, and 113 research institutions including the Institute of Ecological Protection and High-quality Development of the Yellow River Basin and the Water Culture Research Center. The Water Affairs Training Center, the RTVU Open Education Office of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Regulatory Center of Water Conservancy Industry are located in NCWU. Being one of the first batch of master’s degree-granting units in the country, and the doctoral degree-granting unit, NCWU was selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the second batch of universities for “Excellent Engineer Education Program”. In 2012, NCWU was selected as one of the universities for the Midwestern University Infrastructure Construction Program. In 2016, it was approved by the Ministry of Water Resources as “National Water Education Base”. In 2019, NCWU was rated as the Model University of Party Building Work. In 2020, it was officially approved Henan Provincial Distinctive Key University. Taking the national “Double First-class” construction and the classification development of colleges and universities in Henan Province as an opportunity, based in Henan and facing the whole country, NCWU continues to consolidate and enhance the basic status of undergraduate education, actively develops postgraduate education, and vigorously expands international cooperation in school-running so as to provide rich human resources and strong intellectual support for the regional economic and social development as well as the national cause of water resources and electric power. Optimized Distribution of Disciplines. After 69 years of construction and development, NCWU has become a university characterized by water conservancy and electric power. With engineering as its mainstay, NCWU owns coordinated development of science, engineering, management, agriculture, economics, literature, law and art. There are 65 full-time undergraduate majors, including 9 majors of national and provincial excellent programs, 15 majors of national and provincial comprehensive reform pilot programs, 17 national and provincial featured majors construction sites and 10 national and provincial first-level majors construction sites. It has 14 provincial first-level key disciplines, 3 doctoral degree-granting first-level disciplines and 34 master’s degree-granting first-level disciplines. Remarkable Achievements in Talent Cultivation. NCWU recruits students from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There are more than 30,000 full-time undergraduates, master’s students, doctoral students and foreign students. Since its establishment, NCWU has cultivated more than 300,000 senior professional and technical personnel and management talents for the country, including nearly 20 ministers, generals of the armed police hydropower force and provincial and ministerial leaders, as well as outstanding alumni in various fields, such as Wu Xinfen (winner of the National Moral Model), Meng Ruipeng (winner of the nomination award for the Fifth National Moral Model, the National Outstanding College Student, the National Outstanding Member of the Communist Youth League, and over ten other honorary titles), Liu Cixin (winner of the “Hugo Award”), and An Shaohua (founder of the “China Blue Sky Rescue Team”), which has highlighted NCWU’s talent cultivation characteristics of being “Humble, Hardy, Reliable, Practical and Capable”. Continuously Growing Teaching Staff. NCWU has been implementing the strategy of strengthening the university by talents and reinforcing the construction of the teaching staff team. NCWU has over 2,500 faculty members, including over 790 teachers with senior professional titles and more than 800 teachers with doctoral degrees. There are over 60 national and provincial talents including talents of national level such as double employed academicians, selected candidates of National Key Talents Project and national model teachers, as well as talents of provincial level like provincial outstanding experts, academic and technical pioneers, renowned teachers, model teachers and excellent teachers in Henan province. Fruitful Achievements in Scientific Research. In the past five years, NCWU has hosted and participated in more than 2,300 research projects, including 123 projects of National Natural Science Funds and National Social Science Funds. It has hosted and participated in 23 national projects, 538 provincial-level projects and 12 horizontal projects with a contractual funding of 1 million RMB or more respectively. A total of more than 270 million RMB of research funds has been received accumulatively. More than 3,100 academic papers have been published in core journals, including over 2,000 papers indexed by SCI, SSCI, CSSCI, EI and so on. More than 700 academic works have been published. It has won more than 580 scientific research awards at various levels, including 1 National Science and Technology Progress Award and 94 provincial and ministerial research awards. The level and number of awards are among the highest in the universities in Henan Province. Promising Prospects for International Cooperation. NCWU has a long history of international cooperation. Since 1958, it has begun to accept international students and assisted in the construction of Vietnam University of Water Resources and Hydropower. In recent years, NCWU has paid more attention to international cooperation and exchanges, implemented the strategy of activating NCWU by opening-up, and constantly improved the strength of school running and internationalization. It has signed cooperation agreements with high level universities all over the world, including Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, University of Nice Sophia Antipolis in France, Teesside University in the UK, Keimyung University in Korea, Ural Federal University in Russia and so on, to carry out Sino-foreign cooperation in school running. NCWU has actively integrated into the BRICS higher education exchange and cooperation system, and become the leading university in the field of water resources and pollution control and the field of energy in the BRICS Network University. It has established the “Water Engineering and Energy Research Center of BRICS Network University and BRICS University Alliance” with Ural Federal University, the Sino-Russian High-speed Railway Research Center with St. Petersburg State Transport University, and the Logistics Engineering Research Center with Inha University in Korea. NCWU-Ural Institute, the first cooperative schooling institution under the BRICS Network University system, has been approved by the Ministry of Education and officially begun to enroll students. It became a major breakthrough achievement in the opening up of education in Henan Province. The Confucius Institute jointly constructed by NCWU and University College of Technology Sarawak, Malaysia was approved in 2019, based on which NCWU successively established Hua Yu Institute, the first overseas schooling project of NCWU, indicating that NCWU has fulfilled the zero breakthrough in overseas schooling. The strategy of “Activating NCWU by Opening-up” bears new fruits.
